Japan to sign agreement allowing arms exports to Vietnam -Nikkei

first_imgJapan plans to sign an agreement with Vietnam to allow it to export defense equipment and technology to the country, part of a move to strengthen defence capabilities of Indo-Pacific nations to counter Chinese maritime advances, the Nikkei newspaper reported on Wednesday.Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga on Tuesday told his ruling Liberal Democratic Party that he will visit Vietnam and Indonesia next week, the newspaper said, adding he was expected to sign the Vietnam deal during the trip.Japan ended a decades-old ban on overseas arms sales in 2014 to help beef up the nation’s military and lower the unit cost of home-built military equipment but has so far struggled to strike export deals for finished products. Japan’s only export deal for a finished product has been one signed with the Philippines in August for the export of a warning and control radar system developed by Mitsubishi Electric, the Nikkei said.Tokyo is also negotiating with Indonesia and Thailand to sign an agreement regarding defence equipment transfers as it seeks to draw on Southeast Asian demand, it added.Suga’s visit to the two countries would be his first overseas trip since taking office last month following Shinzo Abe’s resignation due to ill health.Topics :last_img read more

CROOK FRANCOIS: ‘I DON’T WANT TO GO TO JAIL’

first_imgA Donegal-based crook exposed by donegaldaily.com as the mastermind of a multi-million euro scam will try to overturn a jail sentence by claiming an order to fully disclose all his assets was draconian!Fugitive Francois de Dietrich has been given a date in January for his appeal against an 18-month term imposed on him for contempt of court. With a warrant out for his arrest, he was last seen in France. People on both sides of the border fear they may have lost millions in investments in liquidated stock.Members of the business community, sporting figures and even travellers handed over money to de Dietrich, but the scam began to unravel when donegaldaily.com began investigating him last year.Court proceedings launched by the Financial Services Authority led to an injunction banning de Dietrich and his company ETIC Solutions from taking any more deposits. The regulatory body also obtained an initial order freezing more than Stg£20m in assets linked to the businessman. De Dietrich, a Frenchman formerly based in Ballybofey, was then held to be in contempt of an order to disclose his global financial affairs in full to the FSA.He is now preparing to contest that finding on the basis that there is no allegation of wrong-doing outside of the North and the Republic of Ireland!!!!It will be contended that he has complied with requirements to reveal all his business interests on both sides of the order. (Though the order related to outside the jurisdictions!)On that basis his legal team are expected to argue that imprisoning him was an excessively draconian outcome.De Dietrich has denied any fraudulent behaviour and, in a statement through his lawyers, claimed to operate legitimate businesses which have been unable to trade due to the legal action. The Court of Appeal was told on Thursday that his challenge has been listed for a one-day hearing on 9 January.CROOK FRANCOIS: ‘I DON’T WANT TO GO TO JAIL’ was last modified: October 7th, 2011 by BrendaShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:crookFrancois de Dietrichfraudsterthieflast_img read more
