AIGenerated Harry Potter Chapter Wins the Internet

first_imgLet us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey. Stay on target A new Harry Potter story hit the Web this week—but it wasn’t written by J.K. Rowling.Entertainment group Botnick Studios on Tuesday released “The Handsome One,” a wild and wonderful tale generated entirely with artificial intelligence. The group used two themed predictive keyboards—one for narration, the other for dialogue—to ghostwrite a hilarious chapter from “Harry Potter and the Portrait of What Looked Like a Large Pile of Ash” (the unofficial eighth book in Rowling’s popular series).AdChoices广告With an air of Jo’s beautifully smooth storytelling, “The Handsome One” sounds like Rowling’s writing voice, but, as io9’s Charles Pulliam-Moore pointed out, “reads like the ravings of a mad person.”It’s nearly impossible to describe the peculiarity of these three-and-a-half pages. So I won’t even try. Instead, feast your eyes on one of my favorite bits from “The Portrait of What Looked Like a Large Pile of Ash”:“‘I think it’s okay if you like me,’ said one Death Eater.‘Thank you very much,’ replied the other. The first Death Eater confidently leaned forward to plant a kiss on his cheek.‘Oh! Well done!’ said the second as his friend stepped back again. All the other Death Eaters clapped politely. Then they all took a few minutes to go over the plan to get rid of Harry’s magic.”Treat yourself to the whole chapter. (Just maybe not in a crowded, quiet place, where your guffaws could disturb other people.)One of the best things to come out of this whole already-amazing experience is Elsa Chang’s gorgeous depiction of one of the more puzzling passages, which she tweeted in response to Botnik’s spellbinding fantasy. Some more AI-generated winners:“Magic: It was something that Harry Potter thought was very good.”“To Harry, Ron was a loud, slow, and soft bird. Harry did not like to think about birds.”“Harry tore his eyes from his head and threw them into the forest.”“The tall Death Eater was wearing a shirt that said ‘Hermione Has Forgotten How to Dance,’ so Hermione dipped his face in mud.”“Several long pumpkins fell out of McGonagall.”“‘I’m Harry Potter,’ Harry began yelling. ‘The dark arts better be worried, oh boy!’”J.K.
