Kgalema Motlanthe elected President

first_imgMotlanthe was also involved in the establishment of the Mineworkers Investment Company (MIC), which was wholly owned by the Mineworkers Investment Trust, with seed capital of R3-million. This has proven to be one of the best examples of effective economic empowerment in the country. He was instrumental in negotiating a deal for mineworkers under which their wage increases would be pegged to productivity at a time when the gold price was low and the industry was closing marginal mines. This deal helped to avert massive retrenchments in the sector. While in NUM he served on the Miners’ International Federation, and was involved in exchange programmes with the United Mineworkers of Australia. “In terms of item 6 of part A, schedule A of the Constitution, I declare the honourable Kgalema Motlanthe duly elected President of the Republic of South Africa,” Langa announced. Motlanthe will now proceed to Tuynhuys in Cape Town, were he will be sworn in as President of the Republic. He is then expected to announce his deputy and new Cabinet. Chief Justice Pius Langa announced in the National Assembly in Cape Town on Thursday that Motlanthe had won an outright majority of votes following a secret ballot by Members of Parliament to emerge as the third post-apartheid President of the country. The unit was later instructed to transform its function to sabotage. While some members of the unit left the country, Motlanthe and Stan Nkosi remained in the country to establish this function. Their unit was also involved in smuggling MK soldiers in and out of the country via Swaziland. The minister in the Presidency and deputy president of the African National Congress (ANC), Kgalema Motlanthe, has been elected President of South Africa, a position he will hold until the country’s next elections in 2009. After his release in 1987, tasked with strengthening the country’s labour union movement, Motlanthe worked for the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), and in 1992 was elected secretary-general of the union. According to the ANC, Motlanthe was born into a working class family in Alexandra, Johannesburg on 19 July 1949, growing up in Alexandra before moving to Soweto. Thabo Mbeki resigned as President on Sunday after being asked to do so by the ANC’s national executive committee. The ANC had nominated its deputy president for the position, while the Democratic Alliance had nominated its candidate Joe Seremane. Motlanthe earned 269 votes, while Seremane got 50 votes. A total of 41 ballot papers were spoilt. 25 September 2008 In December, he was elected deputy president of the ANC at its 52nd National Conference in Polokwane, having served as the party’s secretary-general since 1997. In the 1970s, while working for the Johannesburg City Council, he was recruited into the ANC’s armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe, where he formed part of a unit tasked with recruitment. In July, Motlanthe was appointed minister in the Presidency, taking over some of former Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka’s responsibilities. On 14 April 1976, Motlanthe and Nkosi were arrested and kept in detention at John Vorster Square in Johannesburg for 11 months. In 1977, Motlanthe was found guilty of three charges under the Terrorism Act and sentenced to an effective 10 years’ imprisonment on Robben Island. When the ANC was unbanned in 1990, Motlanthe was put in charge of re-establishing the legal structures of the organisation in the Gauteng region, and was elected its first chairperson. As you go north in Ohio, things go south

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest By Ty HigginsFor the past two weeks, I have been contacted about the woes that farmers are facing in northern Ohio. Cold and wet conditions well into May have pushed back planting progress in a part of the state that is becoming use to this type of pressure.“We are just about a week later than last year,” said Wood County farmer Kris Swartz on his Cab Cam video earlier this week. “We have seen this type of spring so much over the past 4 years that I think this is becoming our new norm.”Swartz has made some nice progress since getting started with his planting season late last week. He is finished with corn and about halfway through with the soybeans. But as you drive around his area it is easy to see that many producers have not been so fortunate. As I made my way to Swartz’ farm on May 30th, I decided to do a mini crop tour, of sorts, so I stopped in each county on the way up Route 23 and I-75 to compare just how things deteriorated the further north I headed. My first stop was in my home county, Delaware. We have had just about normal conditions in this part of the state and farmers are almost done planting. Rains have been heavy at times, but all in all pretty good timing-wise.This field was twin row corn and coming along nicely, with even stands and some moisture if you dig a little.Twin row corn in Delaware CountyI was just in Marion County a week before and I was told this might just be the garden part of Ohio. This field was the most mature field I saw all day and had already been sidedressed.Marion County had this nice stand that has already been sidedressedWyandot County has some spots that have had more rains than others. I found a field of corn that was well on its way and right across the road was a field that had just been planted. This could be sign of a bigger farmer needing to get in early and one that was alright with waiting a bit.Corn coming along nicely on one side of the road in Wyandot CountyA newly planted corn field in Wyandot County on the other side of the roadHancock County was right with Delaware County in progress and growth in these fields.Young soybeans in Hancock CountyThen I hit Wood County and the view changed dramatically, especially after I crossed Route 6. Nothing…absolutely nothing has been done to the majority of these fields yet. The brown ground was offset every so often by a sharp green wheat field, but that contrast made what is not being done in northern Ohio even more evident. The ground that has been worked has been sitting for weeks just waiting on the planter and the ground that hasn’t been touched yet will need more than the sprayer to get them right. Ground being worked in Wood County Weedy fields in Wood County Unworked fields in Wood County“Route 6 has been the cut off line all year long,” Swartz said. “Those south of that line have had better weather and they have been warmer the whole time. The cool wet weather has just killed us to the south of that line.”As most farmers in Ohio have crossed the finish line for the 2018 planting season, many farmers in northern parts of Ohio will be in an entirely different race over the coming days; a race against the crop insurance dates (June 5th for corn and June 20th for soybeans).Despite the late start just a year ago, farmers in this region had very little to complain about when a bountiful harvest followed. Here’s to hoping history repeats itself for them this year.last_img read more

Revive Your Footage With Resolve 15’s Automatic Dirt Repair and Dust Buster Tools

first_imgMotion Estimation — You have four options: None, Faster, Normal, and Better. These will change the effect’s performance and quality.Neighbor Frames — This will let you choose how many frames the effect should reference when removing dirt. If you find the dirt lingers for more than a few frames, you should increase the amount. However, increasing this number will also increase the processing of the effect, which will cause slower machines to struggle.Repair Strength — Of course, the function is in the name. The default setting is 0.9 (with a 1.0 max). If you feel like Resolve has cleaned up too much dirt and the archival footage has lost its charm, you can reduce this number. The imperfections are part of the charm of archival footage. However, sometimes they can be a bit much. Resolve has the solution. There is a refined beauty to archival footage, despite how often it’s spoiled with wear, dirt, grain, and other imperfections. Historical footage can transport us back in time more effectively than ultra-sharp 4k recreations. However, there may be a time when you’re using older material, and the imperfections are severe enough that they are detracting from the viewing experience. Thankfully, In Resolve 15, there are two revival tools can help you fix this problem. If you tend to upgrade your software to the latest version without reading the patch notes (I’m guilty of this with all Adobe programs other than Premiere), then you may not know about two new features in Resolve 15: Automatic Dirt Removal and Dust Buster. The effects are incredibly easy to use — for both tools, and in most cases, it is simply a drag-and-drop operation. So, if you missed these new additions in the update, or are new to Resolve, you need to know what these tools can do.(Before we proceed, it’s worth noting that while the primary purpose of these effects is to revive and remaster older footage, you can, of course, also use them for an array of problems with modern footage.)Automatic Dirt RemovalBeforeAfterFirst, let’s look at what you can do when you have too much dirt in your clip. This isn’t necessarily a noise remover like Neat Video or Resolve’s built-in noise remover; it uses optical flow technology to remove and repair elements that temporarily appear over a frame or two. So, what does that mean? Well, it’s not going to remove features that consistently appear throughout the entire shot, such as a lens smudge or a consistent scratch (as in the example above). But for dust, hair, dirt, and any other unwanted elements that appear in the shot for only a frame or two, this is the tool for the job.As I mentioned, the Automatic Dirt Remover is ridiculously easy to use. You quite literally apply the effect to a node, and in most cases, that’s it. There are, however, a few sliders and drop-down menus you can use to enhance the quality of the effect. The first panel is your main controls. Here you can adjust how the dirt removal tool interacts with your footage. Dust BusterBefore (thick dirt mark on the left of the frame)AfterWhile you can use the Dust Buster on its own, it is primarily a backup to the Automatic Dirt Removal when that tool can’t remove the heavy imperfections from a clip. The primary difference is that you, the user, have to direct where you want Resolve to apply the Dust Buster. Similar to the Automatic Dirt Removal but with less horsepower, this tool is for imperfections that appear in just one frame. If the blemish lasts longer than a single frame, you’ll need to move through the clip frame by frame, drawing a box around the defect. You’ll find the Dust Buster in the same OpenFX panel category as the Automatic Dirt Removal. Once you find it, apply the effect to a new node. You need to make sure that the OpenFX icon is displayed in the drop-down menu below the viewer; otherwise, you’ll be unable to repair your footage. Then, find the imperfection in your clip, and with your cursor, expand a box around it and let Resolve work its black magic. The process can be slightly confusing because Resolve doesn’t give you an indication that the effect is active, and when you draw a box around the error, there’s no change to the cursor’s appearance. That’s it. It’s remarkably powerful, and even someone brand-new to Resolve can use it. While in my example the hair clip was off to the side and free from any moving objects, this process will work on practically any shot.As with any effect, these tools can cause setbacks, especially when you use the Automatic Dirt Repair on a large number of clips. It will cause playback issues, and both of these tools will only really clean specific imperfections for a few frames at a time. But for cases like the problems listed here, these will be your new go-to tools.Lewis McGregor is a certified DaVinci Resolve trainer.Looking for more Resolve tips and tricks? Speaking out to local media students from the high school have expressed discomfort with the situation with some classes hosting more than 40 students. Akierra Misick recently divulged to local media that she is no longer working on splitting the Clement Howell High School but is now working to secure funds to build a new high school on the island since the splitting remedy was just going to be a temporary fix to the overcrowding situation.
