Flu season intensifies, worst season in years

first_imgThe US Center for Diseases is indicating no let up in the current devastating flu season. Last Friday, Dr. Daniel Jernigan, director of the Influenza Division in the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the CDC, said every state, with the exception of Hawaii, have reported increase flu cases over the past month. He said that’s the first time that’s happened in their 13 years of tracking the flu.Several people visiting urgent-care clinics and emergency departments at hospitals had influenza-like illness,” Jernigan said on a conference call.Nationwide, Jernigan said there have been 37 pediatric deaths caused by flu. Flu affecting baby boomers (age-50 to 64)This season, the flu intensified as young people returned to school after the holiday break. Jernigan said young people are usually the second most hard-hit demographic when it comes to flu, just behind those over the age of 65, many of whom have weakened immune systems. But this year Baby Boomers, people 50 -64, are actually the second most affected group behind the elderly.“People 50 to 64-years-old are now in that spot,” Jernigan said. “In other words, Baby Boomers have higher rates (of the flu) than their grandchildren right now.” He said the reason for this is because people in the 50 -64-yearsage group were not exposed to the H3N2 influenza strain, which is rampant this flu season as children.Worst since 2009The CDC cautions US residents to take every precaution not to contract the flu, as the season has not yet reached its peak. It said this year’s flu season is the worst since the swine flu in 2009.Jernigan said what’s especially unusual about this year is that the flu is hitting everyone at the same time.“We often see different parts of the country light up at different times, but for the past three weeks, the entire country has been experiencing lots of flu all at the same time,” Jernigan told reporters on Friday.Increases risk of heart attackComing down with the flu can also increase the risk of heart attack six-old, a new study found, because it puts more stress on the cardiac system and can increase inflammation, and because of the infection the heart beats faster. As many as 56,000 people die from the flu every year in the US, the CDC reports, many of them older with compromised immune systems. The CDC indicates the influenza virus can incubate in the body for one to four days before a person shows any signs of getting sick. That means people can be contagious and not know it.  They can spread the virus around without showing any symptoms at all.Person-to-person transmission — from talking, coughing, sneezing, or breathing on someone else — is more likely to cause an infection than simply touching a surface with some flu virus on it and then reaching for your nose or your mouth. The flu virus can persist on hard surfaces for up to 24 hours but survives only about 15 minutes on tissues. It’s important that people wash their hands often and avoid touching their face too much in order to fight the spread of the germs.Still get the flu vaccineAlthough it is believed the flu vaccine is not as effective this year as in the past, because of  the H3N2 strain, the CDC still advises people to get vaccinated if they haven’t, because it’s effective at preventing other strains of the virus. Flu season can last into May, so there is still time for people to get vaccinated.Pregnant women are especially encouraged to get the vaccine because they’re more likely to be hit hard by the virus. There’s some evidence that getting a shot can protect babies in the first months of life, when they’re too young to get a shot. Many people coming down with the flu can stay home and wait it out with the help of liquids, over-the-counter drugs, and plenty of sleep.Experts say you people can return to work or school after being fever-free for a full 24 hours.Typically, people have the flu for about a week, but some people can stay sick with the illness for up to two weeks, and kids can often be contagious for more than seven days with symptoms like fever, chills, congestion, fatigue, and coughs.last_img read more

Guyana coalition backs Granger for president

first_imgGEORGETOWN, Guyana, – President David Granger seems to have the backing of the members of the coalition A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) as it prepares for a possible regional and general election in March this year. The granger coalition collapsed last month after then government backbencher, Charrandass Persaud, on December 21 backed a motion of no confidence filed by the general secretary of the main opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Bharrat Jagde. The decision by Persaud, a former member of the Alliance for Change (AFC), the second biggest member in the coalition, meant that regional and general elections are likely by March this year in keeping with the Guyana Constitution. The coalition had enjoyed a one seat majority in the 65-member National Assembly. The High Court is expected to give a ruling by month-end as the government seeks to challenge the validity of the votes cast in the National Assembly.Amma Ally, the general secretary of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), the biggest member of the coalition and Granger’s own party, said despite orchestrated rumors and untruths regarding the health of the incumbent he is still considered “fit and proper” for a second term and “the PNCR endorses his candidature.”Granger is in Cuba undergoing medical treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma and his doctors there have said he continues to respond well to the treatment and should make a full recovery.Ally said the party looks forward to be under his guidance for a second term and urged Guyanese to vote for vision, development, cordiality, selfless work and enjoy the good life.“We are also cognisant of his discipline and in no way can he be deemed as a corrupt leader. He possesses the necessary qualities that are required to be a country’s leader. He has constantly been active in cleaning up the 23 years of mess which the PPP put our country in,” Ally added.Another coalition party, the National Front Alliance (NFA) said it too would be supporting Granger.“We look forward to the opportunity to reaffirm our support for him. We did have our executive meeting earlier in the year, coming out in support of that,” said NFA executive member, Keith Scott, who is also Minister of Labor.“The people of this country trust President Granger, he has the right discipline. He has been very democratic in his dealings since he has acceded to power, and that is the kind of person that we need to bring healing in this society.”The Working People’s Alliance (WPA) executive member, Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine, said he sees no reason for his party to be swayed from President Granger as the candidate.“He’s a very upright person, very principled. No one can point a finger at him in relations to personal corruption, he’s really a model citizen, and we’ll be in support,” said Roopnaraine.Granger, who led the coalition to victory in 2015, will face Irfaan Ali,  who last weekend, said that he was “extremely humbled” with the party’s decision to pick him to lead it into the next election.last_img read more

Carousel enters US market with Colorado licence May 11, 2020 Related Articles Optimised communications help Wiraya deliver 15% reactivation boost June 3, 2020center_img Share Carousel orders recruitment drive by promoting Littin to Digital lead May 4, 2020 SBC: Firstly, could you tell us the thought process behind the two brands and how they both aim to stand out in congested markets? Will the two brands run separately, or will they both compliment each other with offers and promotions?Daniel Graetzer: The brand names themselves should hint towards our longer term strategy, we have chosen two very highly recognisable brands which will work well in above the line marketing in regulated markets, as well as being an advantage with organic search. Each brand will have a very distinct identity, and our initial focus in such a crowded market will be to put the customer at the centre of everything we do. Our player experience will grow to become the best in the marketplace, and in particular for SportsBetting.com, we will focus on a less congested, recreational market and simplify the experience as well as ensuring it is a fun, and rewarding experience for players. For RaceBook.com, we will invest heavily in content to ensure that new and experienced players alike have a racing destination second to none. Our aim is to bring some of the fun of the track to the website, and provide players with enough high quality content to make decisions, and to keep abreast of what’s happening in the racing world.SBC: With regards to RaceBook.com, how do you plan on ensuring that you stand out and specifically appeal to racing punters?RaceBook.com will be one of very few racing focused websites that exist, and we aim to be the number one destination for racing enthusiasts. We will do this by offering outstanding customer service, curating and providing high quality racing content, and building a simple, easy to use experience inspired by the wider world of e-commerce. In addition, we will offer a personalised experience to ensure that content and events are relevant to the player, and transparency at every step of the way from odds to withdrawals.SBC: A key issue for racing punters in recent times has been a minimum bet guarantee, how do you plan on catering to high staking customers?Whilst many operators are now offering these options to their customers, we need to first see how our customers react to these options, and so we may choose to offer high staking customers these options by invitation initially. Our first brand to market, sportsbetting.com aims to simplify the experience, and make sports easy, fun and accessible to a wider audience. Racebook.com will certainly include options such as the minimum bet guarantee, and offer more options for high-stake customers which we will announce close to launch.SBC: As for SportsBetting.com, what will you do to attract a core audience and build a loyal following after your formation? Our ambition is to create a brand that is fair, open and transparent. We will offer lots of content relevant to new users, and support them every step of the way. For experienced punters, we will curate and provide original content which will hopefully mean that they visit our brands as not only a destination for betting, but as an entertainment destination for news and content. As well as great content, we will offer fair and easy to use bonuses and promotions, an enhanced player experience with achievements and some gamification to make it more rewarding in every sense as well as financial.SBC: Which sports and which markets will the site primarily be focusing on?We have to keep one or two secrets for launch, but what I can tell you now is that we will focus first on key markets in Europe and Latin America with a heavy emphasis on football, basketball and tennis. We will personalise the experience for each market, and so we will feature events from the world of hockey, and from more than 30 different sports worldwide. Submitlast_img read more

Round table – SG Digital: The future of sportsbook personalisation

first_imgShare FSB selects Glenn Elliott as new COO August 12, 2020 Xtremepush secures ‘OpenMarket’ supplier accreditation   August 26, 2020 National Lottery reimagines ‘It Could be You’ for a new century June 24, 2020 Share StumbleUpon Submit Related Articles Some of the leading suppliers to the sports betting industry offered their insights into the future for sportsbook personalisation based on automated customer segmentation, advanced behavioural analysis and predictive AI-driven models. The sixth round table participant was SG Digital, represented by its VP Sportsbook Product, Nikos Konstakis.SBC: What role does pricing and risk play in the differentiation of a sportsbook offering?Nikos Konstakis (NK): Pricing is a key differentiator in the sportsbook world, especially when you consider the number of operators active within the market. Competitive, if not aggressive, pricing is the best way to attract new players. In mature markets, players are experienced and know how to pick and choose the best bets and where to place them. Good quality local sporting events are the “name of the game”, as betting brands strive to become the local, one-stop betting shop. Focusing on matches or events that drive local interest will engage bettors on a more connective level. To attract and retain customers, an offering must have breadth and depth, which means operators providing markets on every sporting event, both for pre-match and in-play. With that in mind, risk management is essential to a sportsbook, as it’s unrealistic for a small team of traders to become experts on all sporting competitions around the world. Risk is the art of balancing between liabilities management and player satisfaction.SBC: How can operators build on their customer analytics to both enhance player experience and drive higher margins?NK: We have to make betting easy to understand to attract new customers. Lots of sports fans never place bets, mainly because they either find navigating through a sportsbook extremely complicated, or simply not fun. If we can enhance the experience, we can convert more sports fans into active bettors and grow our business.Analysis of customer behaviour should drive product roadmaps in a proposition that will enhance a brand’s margins. Player habits should inform product development so that suppliers and operators give bettors the content they want. There’s nothing dangerous in recreational players that simply want to place bets and get an experience out of it. They are here for the entertainment. Catering to those players is just as useful as catering to seasoned sports bettors. SBC: How can AI and analytics be used to personalise and tailor the sports betting experience?NK: Investment in AI and analytics is key in order to transforming the sportsbook experience towards a more relatable, emotional and entertaining journey for sports fans. As a result, operators are now following the paradigm of digital giants like Amazon, Netflix and Spotify, by introducing new features such as recommended and popular bets, as well as highlighting the latest sports trends. These tools are also enhancing areas such as product efficiency, which helps to optimise and automate business processes including trading. Technology allows us to learn and adapt over time to changing market trends, which leads us to provide a more personal experience for bettors.  SBC: A lot has been said recently about gamification; what can it do for sportsbook?NK: Gamification is talked about heavily in the casino market, and now these concepts are also being rapidly introduced by sportsbook operators, often aimed at the sports fan and casual bettor, as well as the traditional punter. We’re witnessing an increasing number of features such as leaderboards, bet achievements, tipster areas and mission-based betting now available to bettors, which are all being crafted in a way to keep customers excited and actively betting. Moreover, operators are now relying on gamification concepts to boost customer retention and lower acquisition costs. I think you will see a lot more work within this area, particularly as modern architecture and technological capabilities accelerate the development of such tools.last_img read more
