UN chief pays tribute to the courage of DR Congo citizens facing

Temperature check for @antonioguterres upon arrival in Mangina, DR Congo, where the Ebola epidemic started 13 months ago. pic.twitter.com/WOZkICa0qL— UN Spokesperson (@UN_Spokesperson) September 1, 2019 Mr. Guterres was speaking at a press conference on Sunday, in the town of Beni, which is at the epicentre of the country’s deadly Ebola epidemic, where, he said, the people of the region are also facing other serious problems, such as measles, malaria and cholera, as well as insecurity.Speaking in French, he said “I hope that my presence here today reaffirms my full support for MONUSCO [the UN stabilization mission in the country], in the fight against armed groups who spread fear and death. MONUSCO, and its partners – the armed forces of RDC, and the Congolese national police – continue to work together to bring peace and security to the region”.The UN chief went on express his condolences to the families, and loved ones, of the victims of violence, and called on all armed groups to immediately end their attacks on the civil population, and the security forces charged with protecting the Congolese people.”The blue helmets have paid a heavy price in the service of peace. But this only strengthens our determination. We will do all that we can to put an end to the scourge of insecurity in this region. It is important that the people of Beni knows that we hear the cries of distress”.The United Nations system is determined to support the Congolese authorities, local communities and civil society actors, added Mr.Guterres, in the fight against insecurity, and that he will raise the subject with the national authorities in the capital, Kinshasa, on Monday. The Secretary-General also visited the Mangina Ebola Treatment Centre on Sunday, where he expressed his admiration for the resilience of the community, and pointed out the central importance of security to tackling the disease.“To fight Ebola, we need freedom of movement, we need access, we need security”, he said, “And our solidarity must be expressed through increased cooperation between MONUSCO and the Armed Forces of the DRC, to do everything possible to convince them to reintegrate into society”.The countries and organizations that have made financial commitments to support the Ebola response must, said Mr. Guterres, honour their promises, so that the response can continue, uninterrupted, in all affected areas. read more

Macron seeks to cut number of MPs by a third

Mr Mélénchon accused Mr Macron of “crossing a line with the pharaonic aspect of his presidential monarchy”.The front page of Monday’s Libération showed an image of Mr Macron as Jupiter, the king of the gods, holding forked lightning. Expressing concern, the centre-left newspaper said the session in Versailles was the latest manifestation of the president’s authoritarian nature.Mr Macron’s La République en Marche (LREM) party began life only in April 2016, but the former finance minister swept to victory in the second round of the presidential election on 7 May.A month later, his party and its allies went on to claim 350 of the 577 seats in parliamentary elections, a win he says has given him the mandate to push through wide-ranging social and economic reforms.Meanwhile, police have confirmed that a suspected far-right extremist has been charged with plotting to kill Mr Macron at the Bastille Day parade later this month. read more

Were not running away from a noconfidence motion says Nagamootoo as

Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)RelatedPresident’s medical condition was never a factor for no-confidence motion- PPPDecember 20, 2018In “latest news”Opposition’s no-confidence motion against Govt set for December 21December 13, 2018In “latest news”Jagdeo wants no-confidence debated before Budget presentationNovember 21, 2018In “latest news” … to be debated in December after Budget presentation, debatePrime Minister Moses NagamootooPrime Minister Moses Nagamootoo has asserted that the Coalition Administration of which he is apart of is not running away from the the no-confidence motion laid against them by Leader of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Dr Bharrat Jagdeo. However, Nagamootoo, in an address to the public that was streamed live on the Department of Public Information’s (DPI) facebook page, asserted that the motion will not be debated before the presentation and debate of Budget 2019.Moreover, while the Prime Minister assured that his administration is committed to debating the no-confidence motion, a date for its debate has not been fixed.“We’re not running away from a no-confidence motion, we are prepared for a discussion on any such motion, but we believe that there are some issues that take precedent over such a motion…We will debate this motion, we will have this motion discussed, and we will defeat it; because it is not a viable motion, it is a motion that is bred out of desperation; it is a motion that is bred out of Opposition frustration; it is a motion that is bred by this opportunism to look forward to the new wealth of Guyana and trying to destabilise our beautiful country,” Nagamootoo posited, among other things, in his Friday afternoon address.Referring to the Nagamootoo’s comments as “vacuous ramblings” the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) in a subsequent release called on Government to put the motion up for debate at the earliest time possible. The Opposition said on Friday that in an attempt to make a ridiculous case that the no-confidence motion is an act of desperation and would be defeated, Nagamootoo has comically and desperately sought to argue for a delay in debating it.“As they say, ‘the proof of the pudding is in the eating’. Nagamootoo should stop spouting hot air and bring on the no-confidence motion for debate earliest. Despite all the “fat talk”, the truth is he is scared to death to do so. Instead, he parrots the Government’s position that the budget must be presented and debated first,” the PPP declared. The PPP has also said that Government must accept the reality that Nagamootoo is widely regarded as a “political joke” in Guyana, and should be the last person assigned the responsibility of publishing the Government’s position; that is, if the Government wants that position to be taken seriously by the nation.“This man simply has no credibility in the eyes of the Guyanese public, because of the number of lies which he has spoken and written over the years. Only recently, he threatened to demolish the PPP at Whim and at the Local Government Elections (LGE). The results show that not even the backers voted for his candidates at Whim, and the AFC received less than 4 per cent of the total votes cast at the LGE,” the party posited. The PPP went on to address Nagamootoo’s claim of “fear and desperation”, reminding him that as Leader of Government Business, instead of leading his troops to Parliament last Friday, he led them into hiding at Congress Place; and “with the gates securely locked and the environs surrounded by a band of aggressive APNU supporters, he then puffed his chest to the press as he declared that he is not afraid of the no-confidence motion.”“We reiterate our call for the no-confidence motion to be debated in the Parliament earliest, and we respectfully demand that the National Assembly puts the Motion up for debate. We say to the Government, ‘Stop the grandstanding outside the National Assembly and come to the National Assembly to debate the Motion’,” said the PPP.Clerk of the National Assembly, Sherlock Isaacs, has written the Parliamentary Opposition, informing them that their motion will not be heard before the 2019 Budget is dealt with by the House.Opposition Member of Parliament and former Attorney General Anil Nandlall had contended that the motion “cannot be ignored or tossed aside in favour of other Government business in the National Assembly. Certainly, it is required to be debated before a national budget is presented. The rationale is a pragmatic one: that if the No-Confidence Motion is dealt with after the budget, then the Government that presented the budget may not be in office to implement that budget,”.Finance Minister Winston Jordan is expected to present the National Budget on Monday, November 26, 2018, and the debate is expected to commence one week after, with Consideration of the Estimates beginning the following week. read more

Soy Growers Urge Congress to Increase 2018 Farm Bill Funding

first_imgSoy growers and several other agriculture groups are urging Congress to increase funding for the 2018 Farm Bill, as farmers face an economic downturn not seen since the Great Depression. In a letter this week to Congressional budget and appropriations committees, the American Soybean Association (ASA) and other groups expressed concerns regarding financially difficult times for farmers as prices remain low, cost of production climbs and net farm income has dropped 50 percent in four years.“While we do not yet have a full-fledged financial crisis in rural America, a good many farmers and ranchers are not going to be able to cash-flow in 2017,” the letter states. “With USDA projecting continued low prices in 2018 and beyond, this situation threatens to quickly and vastly expand with each and every crop year.”They added that a strong safety net will ensure that U.S. growers and ranchers can continue farming until conditions turn around.“Providing this safety net will be impossible to achieve without providing additional funding outside the current Farm Bill resources,” the groups state in the letter. “We were the only sector willing to contribute to deficit reduction when the farm economy was healthy.  Now we look to Congress to provide the resources necessary to help America’s farmers and ranchers through this very difficult period.  Farm budgets are very tight this year and with USDA predicting commodity prices to remain flat for the next several years, we need a strong, effective farm bill to help farmers and ranchers through this difficult, long-term period of depressed prices and income.”At the beginning of the month, the House Agriculture Committee also asked the committee to refrain from more budget cuts on ag and underscored the “severe economic slump” in rural America.Click here to read the entire letter.last_img read more
